Site revamped to include 50 QB programs
« on: February 06, 2005, 10:24:50 AM »

Having discovered, that amazingly there is still a very widespread interest in the dear old Qbasic in this forum, I have revamped the programs page on my site to include over 50 QB for downloading.

I have included on the programs page my personal opinion on the four versions of Basic I have used. Feel free to make your comments for discussion, if you also have experience with these other Basics.

Did you say QB? I found a section and downloaded something called Games1.zip, but apparently I need to get another program to make those work. Anyways, I don't think that was the QB stuff you were talking about, or was it?

I find it hard to navigate around your site. It's not the worst I've seen, but it just seems...too hard. I need a "Hey Stupid! Download the QBasic Stuff Here!" link or something. The site dosen't feel user friendly at all.

If you do not have it already, you need WINZIP to unzipZIP files from any Shareware site. Once Winzip is installed, just click on any ZIP fille you have and make sure you notice where it unzips. Pregerablly create a TEMP drive to unzip all stuff for testing first.

Sorry if you find my site a bit confusing but I experiment in several languages.        Gordon

No wonder you could not make any sense of the working programs on that page, as apart for a few Compiled with Quckbasic into self running EXE files, the majority of working programs are TKN files created with Liberty Basic. It clearly states there above:-

YOU MUST ALSO DOWNLOAD THE RUNTIME FILES TO USE THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS BY CLICKING ON     LBPROGS4.ZIP

To enable you to download the necessary runtime files click on now:-

http://sionet.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/LBcode.htm

But please make sure to read the README1st.txt included. However since this is a QB forum I presume most would want to click on QBASIC on the web page below for some QB code:-

CLICK ON THESE FOR MORE PROGRAMS AND THE CODES   LIBERTYBASIC    JUSTBASIC     BBCBASIC    QBASIC

If it is Games or 1980s music you want then click on BBCBASIC on the Programs web page.

Hope this helps you and all.

Since I cannot get Wonderfull Windows XP to rcognise the joystick now only with QB, I am trying to convert the QB games to be controlled with the mouse.

I got them to work. Why not just include the automenu with the other zip files so I don't have to do a separate download, or just make executables?
I know you specify in your readme files that you need LBPROGS4.zip to run them and you specify the page where to download it, but it's hard to find it on that page. The link is hidden inside a paragraph about INGEMAR BJERLE. I don't know how obvious it looks to you, but I scanned over that page several times before I saw it. And you're making things to complicated. I just give up when stuff gets this hard. That's usually how it goes for the rest of the world. If they can't just download it and run it, they'll forget it and delete it. Believe me. I'm speaking from experiece.

You're games are alright, although they do lack alot of polish. They also tend to lag a bit. I'm running on a 1400mhz laptop btw. Of course I don't know how long ago you made these. Do you have any current projects?

Thanks for the comments. I will amend the page in question as suggested. I an strictly a 71 year old Amateur Programmer, never done it professionally so I welcome comments.

Of course the object of the exercise is for others to inprove on my efforts for their own use, and try converting stuff from one language to another such as QB.          Gordon

Radical,

Looking back over the posts ( I only stay online for a few minutes with all the hacking around ), I think you were asking why I do not include the Automenu with the all the runtime files with each of my Liberty Basic efforts. The reason is as you can see these runtime files in lbrpgs4.zip amount to over 1 Mb, and I suspect there are around 80 of my LB programs on my site. So to include the runtime files with every program would take up over 80 Mb of web space. I admit my server Wanadoo allows me 100 Mb of free space, but even on Broadband I would not fancy uploading 80 Mb, when I provide instructions how to change the name of AUTOMENU.EXE to match the relevant TKN file, to create your own runtime files for any one program.

If it is Games you are interested, have a look a the BBCBASIC from the programs page. You will find there are over 80 games in the BBCFUN  Zips, mostly 20 year old games written by many much cleverer than me.
