Dale Harris Point of Sale on TV
« on: August 16, 2004, 12:31:54 PM »

The DHPOS program that I work with (written in QB) was on TechTV last week, on the show "The Screen Savers".  I'm trying to get hold of a tape of the show, but I thought you guys might like to know that a QB program was featured on a cable TV show Smiley

This program: http://pages.prodigy.net/daleharris/pos.htm
No, I didn't write it, although I help out with the project a bit.  It's got about 54,000 downloads since we started counting, roughly 100 a day, and it's used all over the world (45 countries known).

Jonathan, You're a bit modest. In fact you have written some of the real tricky stuff in the POS system, and are a true contributor to the system.

I've recommended it to a few small businesses here in Mexico. Say hello to Dale and the gang. I don't make it to the chat anymore, it drives me nuts.

Thanks for the input moneo Smiley I appreciate it.

Yeah, my part in the program is mainly in making it work better with windows printers and other windows-only equipment.   So, basically I do windows slave stuff.   I also test current versions and am more familiar with the inner workings of many program functions than anyone other than Dale.  But the truth is, Dale does the hard stuff Smiley

Something not so nice...
At about 3pm local time Wednesday the 25th of August, my wife dropped our two kids off at her grandmothers to go to the mall.  She went to Holland instead.  Now I'm here with 2 kids and pretty much no way to keep working...

So, anyone wanna watch the kids? Smiley

Truth be told, we are all (my kids and I) better off without her, just in case that isn't evident from the fact that she left them somewhere and never came back. But I'm still pretty annoyed, and I am worried about her well-being, and I am worried about keeping the house without her child-care and the little income she had.  In general, I am up the creek, as they say, without a paddle.

Oh well.

Jonathan,

That's awful news! She seemed like such a sweet person on the POS chat. I can't believe it.

Are there any relatives or friends nearby that you can turn to?

Instead of just losing your job by not being able to go to work, talk to the boss, explaining your sudden situation. Maybe you can work out some sort of a solution (work at home, bring kids with you to work, etc.) I know you're an excellent programmer, and I'm sure they know it too and don't want to lose you.

Do you belong to a church of any kind? If not, I recommend you go to the nearest Catholic church. Just tell them what happened and ask them if they can help you. You'll be surprised, most churches are pretty well orgranized to handle situations like yours.

Keep me posted.

Yeah, I'm involved in church and the pastoral staff knows my situation.  As far as work goes, my steady job is actually at a grocery store so working at home is not an option.  The programming stuff I do on the side, and I can do most of it at home.  Unfortunatly it is neither permanent nor sufficent to pay down the bills she left me with.

The situation is not all bad.  The church is gearing up to help me it seems, and Tarah and my own family are both there for me in all respects, but the real issue right now is the financial one and of course child care.

I'll report more later.

Things are looking somewhat up...

I've found the really big bill she left me with is not due for 2 more weeks... really good news.  There are people everywhere trying to help me, one of the girls from work has been bringing me dinner, and the Church is definatly there for me.  If any of you want to hear an incredible story, something that happened to me yesterday, give me a ring jsimpson@home-nets.biz.  And of course if anyone has an extra $5000 lying around... Smiley

Right now my focus is on getting things in order but I am going to eventually become more active here and with DHPOS again.  I am proud to be part of the DHPOS program, and I think it's an important part of my life and my future.  I've learned more about programming working on that project then anything else.  Applying concepts to a real-world problem set is really fun, and it gives a focus that making the next RPG never will.  There are real people out there using something I made every day!  Thats just cool.

Anyway, I'm taking care of the kids and myself, and should she choose to return I am going to provide the best of care for Tarah to bring her back to where she should be, with her children, her church, God, and maybe someday with me.  I still have a very deep amount of care for her even though I have a pain and disapointment that is very great.
