Can someone tell me how the heck I'm supposed to load a bitmap? I don't exactly want it in any specific programming language, I just want a dissection of the file, and enough information so that I can create a loader of my own.

Thank you.

I hate to shove it in your face like most people would do, but wotsit.org has all the information you need on the bitmap format.  It tells you things like what's what in bitmap files and in what order and for how many bytes.
