Man, for that image you need 3D Studio, Photoshop, lots of plugins, and 10 years of training.

Seriously, you could try GIMP. It may not stand up to Photoshop but for a beginner its quite good =).

if you want something to make something like that, you can use LView Pro ++.  ask zack about it, its simplistic yet gives good results.  you can download the trial version at lview.com i think.

I am not saying that Gimp is bad. You can create great stuff with it, but Photoshop is easier to use and is way more supported (more third party pluggins) and by all means faster and more powerful. But that's my opinion...

And I've tried Gimp for windows and it is far too unstable Sad

Hmmm. I got Photoshop 5 in 2000. I installed it and began to play with it. Everything I know I've learned it by myself. So it can't be hard, mostly 'cause I am far from a genius...

Any powerful tool is cryptic if you don't know how to use it.  But it is self explanatory.  Just play around.  Click some buttons, make layers.  After a short, short awhile it should be familiar to you.

I...shall we say, acquired....Photoshop 7 a few months ago. It took me a month to figure out one concept: layers. Past that, I just needed to know in what menus were things located.
A lot of things in Photoshop you'll find you never use. Like, all the brushes...man...I use about three of them. Tongue

I use plenty of them Smiley For direct illustration. You can make marvels with those brushes.

As time goes by, I use more and more of the stuff PS provides.
