how can I run a .bat file with qb.

I tried
run "hello.bat"
which works, but it doesn't work when compiled.

also is there a way to close qb at the end of a program without compiling

You can use the SYSTEM command at the end of the program, instead of END.  Look it up in QBHelp.

I believe the question wasn't "how do I close the DOS window after my compiled program exits?"... the answer would be SYSTEM.

SYSTEM will not close the QB window......

Theoretically speaking, you could write an assembly routine kill the QB IDE by force. I think. I don't actually know assembly, so I'm not absolutely sure it would work.

SYSTEM exits the IDE if the program was specified to run from the command line. ("QB /RUN yourprog.bas")
