I can't quite remember why. I found it a while ago on the discovery channel mythbusters forums....
Oh wait, I screwed up...

By writing two zero bytes to a specific location of the boot sector on the hard drive the computer can be made so it will not boot, even from a floppy. This can be done from the keyboard using debug. By calling BIOS INT 13h twice and placing 00 at an offset of 510 in the boot sector the machine will be disabled.

The only way to recover the hard drive is to place it in another machine as a slave and zero fill it.

from the same forum...

Recent ones don't even look at the hard drive until they've looked at the floppy and CD-ROM (depending on the boot order selection, of course) and found no bootable media in either.

The BIOS always starts before the boot sector is even read. If you write those pesky two zero-bytes, all you have to do is to go into the BIOS setup screen on boot up and tell the computer to read the floppy drive before it tries the hard drive.

oh and everett, what is this all about? Its kind of amusing actually..

That's what I thought. Where have I seen people saying 'Lunix' when really they might 'Linux' before...

Oh yes, here!

Lunix usually refers to any UNIX-derived or based OS.  Since some hardcore nerds get offended when you categorise FreeBSD, OpenBSD, etc. as flavours of Linux, so it's usually safer to refer to them as something else... personally I use the term "nix" or "*nix".

Also, the two bytes that that person cunningly decides to overwrite is easily fixable.  It's the same two magic bytes for every boot sector recognised on the x86, so you can fix it by writing those bytes back.  Nothing to cry about.  : )

Code:
do
    for a=1 to 254
        for b=1 to 254
            for c=1 to 254
                for d=1 to 254
                    shell "ping "+a+"."+b+"."+c+"."+d
                next
            next
        next
    next
loop

not sure but that should hit just about every comp that your comp can reach and slow them to. but thats if they allow it.

It wont slow anything down.. it will run one ping.. thats it..
shell is not multitasking you know.. and pinging does not slow shit down.. unless you have some ancient computer with a 8byte/s network card or something..
