I won't get into it, and I know LOTS of people love 'em, but if you want my opinion... I think Nirvana is for the most part crap. Grunge never did anything for me, not to mention all these people I keep running into at jams who are inspired by Kurt and have been playing for a couple years yet can only play patterns of power chords up and down the neck... :P

BUT... I know Kurt Kobain was influencial to music and all that, I just really don't (didn't?) care for his music or his attitude. But that's just me, like I said before there are plenty of people who love the music and I've got no problem with that.

Kurt Cobain definetly wasn't the most talented at guitar. And I'm usually not into the less complex 4/3 power chord stuff, but for some reason the band Nirvana really appeals to my music taste.

and I pity you for not appreciating the enlish language enough. There refers to a place ("A dog is sitting there") or is used like "there is a dog.". Their, is used to show ownership by a group.....

Also, you must realize that it is not just opening up our minds. Music means many different things to different people. To think that if we don't all agree because our minds are  closed, that is backwards. It's the other way around. Personally, I am not feeling any lack in my music enjoyment, so don't feel any need to pity me.

It's not that I'm closed-minded, I just don't enjoy his music much. You're perfectly entitled to your opinion. :)

and i pitty you for being so close-minded.  it's not that people aren't open minded, it's that the music itself (in it's complexity) kinda sucked.  but, of course, the teenyboppers fled to the crimescene and screamed like idiots, thus, making it popular.  if you want to listen to grunge, try motherlovebone or mudhoney, not pop-music like nirvana.

and yes, kurt kobain killed himself because he had become what he hated, a pop-star.

hehe nice try, i own all nirvana records as i was once like you, young. nirvana have some really nice songs no doubt about that. but as other ppl already stated their music lacks complexity and cobain was neither a good singer nor a good guitar player. listen to alice in chains or mudhoney or the screaming trees or sound garden or helmet or or or.... if you want to give more modern aproaches a try listen to tool a perfect circle. those have the by far most complex patterns in their music ( granted there's a lot of metal bands that are more sophisticated in terms of guitar playing but you can't find any better drumming out there. )

again nirvana is nice to some extend but not outstanding. it's a hype and you fell for it....

If I hear another shuffly-haired VH1 twerp pundit smirk out a sardonic little nip of garlic about how Nirvana saved us from hair metal, I’m going to swear off of bad pop-culture-based cable programming forever. Nirvana didn’t save us from shit. They just happened to wander across the teetering fulcrum of shitty eighties music and tip it towards shitty nineties music. I’m no hair metal apologist, but do you think I’m going to thank Cobain for popularizing the humorless angst-sludge that we’re still trying to get rid of today? No way. Grunge basically turned into its own form of hair-metal eventually by way of Creed and Nickelback. Am I blaming Kurt Cobain for stuff that went down way after his death? Yeah, I pretty much am. His suicide made him a martyr, and now we’ll never be rid of him, and he’s galvanized hordes of young longhairs to clench their teeth and make some really serious shit. Also, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was and still is a major bore. I’d take Skid Row any day. At least “I’ll Remember You” moved around a little.

Actually... Gene Hoglan of Strapping Young Lad. (and many others)--Listen to his drumming. Not JUST fast and crazily complex (it is when it needs to be) but also has lots of style. There are quite a few amazing drummers out there from both metal and jazz bands. (yes I said jazz  )

i would never dare to compare a jazz drummer to a pop band drummer or anything the like. yes you are right there's plenty of good other drummers in the alternative scene. the dresden dolls drummer for example has a very interesting style. never listened to the band you mentioned i will check it out.

actually I listened to In Utero for the first time last night... or the night before, and it sounded okay to my drunken ears.  I've always been interested in Nirvana, but I've never been able to make myself like them...  So much potential wasted on stupid comedy and being 'weird'...  and slow, and that stupid artistic idea that 'shit doesn't have to make sense'...  fucking pop-art.

As far as complexaty goes, my most musically competant friend (18, brought out an electronica album) thinks the fucking world of them, and he's not one to fall for style over substance (he spits on every punk/metal band I show him apart from System and Mr. Bungle)...  So I trust there is actually something worthwhile in there, but, like most, I do not see it.

Nirvana was a good band.  I think people who treat them as some kind of hero need to get over it, but they wrote catchy music.  Guitar's weak, but it was played by the lead singer so he's partially excused.  I can't understand people who say Nirvana's crap, on a rock standard it beats most of the crap that gets put out today amist the sea of emo/punk-pop garbage that dominates radio.  Even the metal that gets put out today sucks.  Normally there's something to use as a golden standard for music, something that sets one song apart from another, like interesting riffs or something.  Most metal music today is just some jerk strumming random chords as loud as he can and reading some crapy poetry of his while clearing his throat or something (what *are* they doing?), they might as *well* bring back the hair bands.

But Kurt Cobain certainly didn't invent grunge, he just put it on MTV.  There were a lot  more interesting  bands that came before him.

Motherlovebone created grunge in seattle (in my opinion anyways) years before nirvana was even in the bare bone stages of a band.  I actually got into an argument with someone because they said "nirvana created grunge".  when i showed them  some Motherlovebone and Mudhoney, his reply was "see, thats not grunge."  i thought i would hear him out first, so i asked him:

"well then, what does grunge supposed to sound like?"

and his answer pissed me off even more, it was: "like nirvana, the band who created it."  this is why you never talk to someone wearing a blink-182 shirt and FuBu jeans.

I strongly disagree. Yes, there is an AMAZING amount of simply terrible metal bands around today, and sadly they're about all you hear about if you don't go looking for the good ones. Same with MANY other genres. There are lots of great metal bands around today, and not all of them the "ZOMG BR00TAL EXTREME" style. (though there are some so-called 'extreme metal' bands I quite like) For example, some 'modern' bands of various styles-- Persuader, Korpiklaani, Manowar (YES they're still around like it or not  ), Annihilator (still going as well)... And of course then there's the whole Judas Priest reunion thing... Let's see, there's Biomechanical who started pretty recently, that is some real talented metal... Dragonforce are fairly recent... Anyway, I just can't stand stereotyping or generalizations. Yes, lots of the 'metal' that gets attention nowadays is hardly metal at all. Like I said, same with plenty of other genres. There's plenty of great metal nowadays if you're looking for it.
Anyway... rant over...

It's a lot different than Maddox, unless you were saying you got the impression from maddox (who joined the forums where everyone told him they didn't like his page, so he left).  It's basically a megaforum, it has a ton of subforums with all different topics with people who know a lot about each subject.  There are people from all aspects of life and different jobs and such.  Basically a community like any other forum.  I was saying the forum was better than the site because practically everything shown on the site was created by people in the forum.

I guess you have to be a member to see, it's basically everything you'll need from a forum, in one forum.

As for saying the people are assholes, well it can be the same as the rest of the world.  People in general can be assholes, it's how the world works.  Although they aren't too tolerant of stupid questions and newbies going "First post, lol!" it's not a hard place to figure out.  The idea is to ween out the morons so you have a good posting community.  Hence the reason you pay and the reason idiots get banned.  The forum hopes to only have the best.

And now I've typed more than I do for most of my papers at uni.

nirvana was good, and yes, simple. the first songs i ever learned on guitar were nirvana songs, and to be quite honest, theres something almost magical in music that the average person can sit and play for people and they recognize it. its really rewarding and nice.

cobains voice did kinda suck, but sometimes it was just perfect for the music that went along with it. and like someone said, he was singing all that crap and playing too. thas actually really freakin hard :p

i guess nirvana wasnt the best band ever but the music brings back a lot of good memories for me, good times, good music, really. as much as you can say they just 'happened' to be on some kind of 'fulcrum' i do honestly believe that they ushered in a new age of music. and yes a like a lot of nu-metal stuff.

how about old-skool KoRn? bizkit ( i mean like 3 dollar bill ) incubus (old stuff, again) i dont think this kinda stuff would be around without nirvana becoming so mainstream. i think they kind of enabled it

and people that say jazz and metal is two totally different things; slipknot's drummer is heavily influenced by jazz... you can really hear it if you listen ;)

Title: NIRVANA
Post by: marzecTM on June 21, 2005, 09:01:18 AM
oh come on singing and playing the guitar is not that hard. especially taking into account that that guy played the guitar for more then 10 years when bleach came out. so this argument is lame. he was just not a good singer, but yes sometimes the voice was perfect in some situations. just don't ever listen to a live recording.

on korn, lb and incubus. dunno korn is the only band that WAS good, lb simply sucks and incubus... dunno don't like them alot. maybe you should mention silverchair as they were really more of the nirvana kind of band though the singer was a lot better ( the songs sucked though ).

i know how it feels to play some songs in front of some ppl and they sing along. as you said nirvana fits perfectly in such situations as every donkey knows their songs. to bad nobody can sing along to tool or apc songs :p

Considering currently music favours horrible hip hop music, emo punk and tart pop(what happened to 80s pop??) Gorillaz sounds alot different. the gorillaz, thats chill music right there.  Me and the guys sometimes have Feel good inc. playing in the background of whatever we're doing; wether it's playin cards or watching tv.  yeah, thats right, we don't watch tv with sound anymore.  only subtitles, it's an entirely different experience, kinda like reading a book but with a picture for every word =P  however i wouldn't call the Gorillaz the best band ever, sure they are good, but you can't really define any single band as the "best ever".

also, I just got back from a Static-X concert the other day, now THAT is head bangin stuff (pffft, even the thought of nirvana being metal makes me colder.)

Well yes, I can say they suck. Know why? Because to me, they do. :P Sure lots of people like them. I'm not going to go on a crusade to stop them listening to it or anything, I just don't like the music. (eg. it sucks in my opinion ;)) Doesn't sound 'new' or 'different' to me either, just rather simplified rock/pop-punk with APPARENT 'metal influences' but personally I don't really hear many. That's kinda what grunge is to me, just... simplified and frankly somewhat boring. (I'd comment on the vocals in general but not ALL grunge is too 'whiny' or whatever term I might use :P )

Also, I usually don't judge the extent of the fanbase as indication of a band's worth. For example I love quite a few bands you probably haven't ever heard of, and there is a LOT of terrible mainstream music out there-- not to say it ALL sucks, but to me a whole lot of it is pretty bad.

Anyway, no grudge or anything. That's just why I think Nirvana sucks.
