Title: Qbasicnews suggestions
Post by: Sumo Jo on May 30, 2005, 08:16:42 PM
Alright, by the looks of the personal attacks thread, everyone has some opinions on some things they'd like to see.  Here's where you can suggest ideas on what you think you'd like to see here and we'll look and see.

Remember, suggesting doesn't mean it's going to happen, but it's going to let us know what's on your mind.

I guess there are a lot less suggestions than there were.

I don't think any big changes are needed...well, perhaps a Toast (or Roast or whatver it may be called) forum should be good where are threads that "gets carried away" could be put. That might decrease the moderating also...if u see a topic in (whatever) forum that's gets to hostile/hot/evil/vulgar/creamy then just move it to the roast/toast (or whatever it's called) forum and the "battle" can continue there...

I've never felt that the QbasicNews staff has "run this show" in a bad way...I've just seen members that has been acting bad...

Good luck SumoJo!

first off, this post was a nice initiative, way to go right at the problem, instead of beating around the bush.

what i can suggest is just try to make sure theres enough mods to deal with problem threads like... within an hour id say.

that whole 'how do i make a keylogger' thing is still very fresh in my mind. i mean, what if more and more people started posting crap like that? i think you just need to be in a position to deal with things quickly. if that means more people (which it looks like youre already doing from the old people topic) then im for that.

thats all, peace

p.s. thanks for listening and setting up a 'forum' in which people can voice their concerns. thats the only mistake i could see with qbn leadership in the past (more than once) is that people that had concerns didnt get a voice to be heard until they resorted to ... you know. thx again and good luck

Agreed with chaOs here.  this is an excellent initiative.  I've posted a indirect suggestion on another thread but I'll make the suggestion official here :-).

I guess you have to ask yourself what's the new reality of the members here.  What are they doing today?  And how can QBasicNews can be of help to what it is they are doing.  As Such, I would suggest the following (added to what's there already under FreeBasic):

FREEBASIC FORUM THREADS
FreeBasic Learning Help
Beginners, ask your questions here.

FreeBasic libgfx specifics
Any questions about using libgfx basic functionality can be asked here.

FreeBasic SDL help
How to's, Tips and Tricks, Questions and Answers about SDL in FreeBasic

FreeBasic OpenGL help
How to's, Tips and Tricks, Questions and Answers about OpenGL in FreeBasic

FreeBasic MIDI and Digital Audio Help
Where anything sound and music related can be talked about and helped.

FreeBasic Game Development Help
Want to know how to do AI, create maps and the likes?  This is where you can ask away.

FreeBasic Application Development Help
If you're making an application, tool or utility, this is where you can talk about it, ask questions, polls and the likes.

Of course these are jsut suggestions.  But seeing where the community is today, what everyone is doing (using FreeBasic for the big majority lol) and what's up ahead in the future, I think a FreeBasic specific Categorie is warranted and these sub categories wouldn't be a half bad way to organize things :-).  I think with these added it would help newcomers or anyone with a specific question locate the answer a bit quicker this way.

EDIT: ok I'll admit that the Application Development sub category is for me first ;-). lol

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

As for adding of new subforums, our Freebasic forums aren't popular enough to warrant that right now.  If the forum's traffic picked up and contained many of these threads that would be an excellent possibilty.

Post by: Pete on June 12, 2005, 03:17:24 PM
I disagree! Don't add that many forums!  All it does is make the site confusing and difficult to navigate.  There aren't enough posts there to warrant all of those divisions... it would just lead to a lot of empty forums.

I'm of the opinion that the fewer forums you have, the better.  Add new forums only as they're needed (like when Wildcard added the FB forums when the number of responses to the FB threads was getting too difficult to handle).

I agree with Pete. Keep the number of forums to a minimum.

Imagine a hamburger joint that has 20 varieties of hamburger on the menu on the wall. In reality, they only serve combinations of the same standard hamburger. But, the menu has all kinds of options like: with everything on it; with everything, but hold the mayo; with lettuce/tomato only; with cheese; etc.

It takes forever to read this kind of menu, slowing down the flow of customers. Similar to what happens with all the forums at Qbasicnews as compared to Petesqbsite.

My apologies if this has been suggested before, but I can't search the forum due to internet problems. The only thing I'd add to the site is an active topics list. With as little posts as are made here, I think it would be a good idea.

well, i don't know if im the only person with this problem, but if i "X" out the window it automaticly marks all the forums read. which blows big fat fucking monkey chunks  :barf:  :barf:  :barf:
second, if it's possable, when i hilight(sp?) a section of someones post and hit "quote" that it quotes that part of the post thank you.

indeed, accidentally closing the browser DOES suck fat chunk monkey balls.

The problem is PhpBB doesn't store in the database which topics you've read - it just stores the last date you visited on.

SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org/) keeps track of which posts you've read, so it can show you ALL unread posts (except those before you registered, I think). It makes the database larger, but I think it's worth it.

is there a friendly way to hack your last visit back like say a couple of hous? lol. doubt it >.>

Snitz has an option, 'View Posts From' with options like last 6 hours, last day etc.

On the subject of Site suggestions, surely Z1re is a poor choice for a mod?  I wouldn't expect her to be fair on any dispute, just have a hissy fit if it annoys  her (forgetting the other few hundred users)

Just for everyone's information, Z!re is not mod, admin, or anything like that. Just pink.

And there is a phpbb mod/hack that keeps the undread posts even if you close the window. Ill look into it.

You can't .... KiZ = 3 letters: 3 colours.... The rainbow has at least 6 on a simple effect
123456

You'd only get a flame:
KiZ

Unless they have a way to fade font colours....

Cool, but do you have a "mark all post as read" option somewhere. Other forums use that and it's a nice option to have to clear everything once you're done visiting.

Yes, we have those too. In each forum theres one in the top-left corner ("Mark all topics read") and on the forum index page, there's one in the bottom-right corner (just where the forum list ends) to mark all forums and their posts as read.

Failing that, can I get my name to be blood-red?

Click the "Mark all forums read" link on the main forum page. (directly above "Who is Online")

Won't work. Even the forum based one doesn't. I get upon refresh topics yellow, blue, unread, etc.

Crap.

I've even deleted my cookie for this forum...

Oh yeah, and umm...Make it so changing your email address doesn't lock you out of the forums lol ^_~;;

I just remembered why I couldn't log into Pritchard.  I changed my email to something that didn't exist because...I was stupid and forgot about the hide my email address option.

Well then the forum blocked me out and told me I had to confirm to get back in! >_<;;

Since this is the "official" forum suggestions thread, I've got one...

Add a new subforum called "Browser Wars" where people can whine about browsers to their hearts' content. "ZOMG FIREFOX SUX0RZ LEMME GO HAVE SEX0R WITH MY IE" and "ZOMG IE IS DEH CRAPZ LEMME GO SEX0R MY FIERFOXX". It would be against the rules of this subforum to give any actual decent advice regarding browsers, instead it would just be a whinefest forum for people to get off on their preferences. Then such crap could be kept out of the General Discussion forum. Is this a brilliant idea or what? :cash:  :wow:  :shifty:
