THE QBASIC FORUM COMMUNITY
http://www.network54.com/Index/10167

If you go there and click on Links and Downloads, you will find a link to QBasic News.

How about a reference in your link list?

Thanks - Mac

I suggest you dont.

The network54 forum is elitist, and most people there only seem to visit so they can flame new people.

There is a discussion going on over there about it. But I doubt it'll make any difference.

Weren't you the same guy who told SJ Zero to not post about QBXL anymore on that forum of yours?

...

Also I kind of agree with Z!re about the elitist stuff.

Title: I don't think so
Post by: Mac on January 20, 2005, 07:26:40 PM
I did a GOOGLE search to find "SJ Zero" posts. I found 5, but there were no replies, so evidently you are thinking of some other forum.

I remember no incident of "telling someone not to post", but if you can find any, I would be glad to respond.

Our forum is fairly open, so people do stuff. Evidently Z!re thinks there is some eliteism going on. No such thing that I know about. People come there and paste stuff. What's so elete about that?

I am baffled by the rage of Z!re's posts and simply don't know what to say.

Mac

I quote, seeing as some people can't access QBXL:
Quote from: "Mac"

Subject: Please refrain from posting on the Qbasic forum
Content:
I allowed your SPAM post to remain on the forum as it was new information and of possible interest to older regulars.

However, for the most part, the regulars are dignified people who have no use for an R-rated forum and our main clientele is "newbies", people of age 12-15 who are trying to learn about programming.

If you examine the contenet of the 800 pages of the forum, you will see that it consists of questions about the capabilities of QBasic and attempts to answer these questions, with occational lapses into flaming, etc.

Thank you,

Mac (QBasic forum owner)

Quote from: "Fling-Master"

Subject: You sir, are an idiot.
Content:
There really is no other word for that. I can't *believe* that you actually own that forum.

Quote from: "Nekrophidius"

Subject: Who are you? [Edit, refering to Mac]
Content:
Who are you to judge who is dignified or not? And who are you to judge who should see this magazine or not? I think the people of qbasic.com are able to judge for themselves, they don't need a babysitter. And "clientele" is a really interesting word used in this context...generally speaking, a client is one who pays for services...I don't see anyone paying to use qbasic.com. And it's not SPAM, it's PROMOTION OF A USEFUL QB RESOURCE, or do you think that qbasic.com is the only useful QB resource out there or something?

If you examine the content of QBXL Issue #2, you will find a lot of useful information regarding QB programming, as well as entertaining insight and off-the-wall satirical reviews. No harm is being done to anyone, so you have no real reason to be complaining.

Don't make me mad. I'm really nasty when I'm mad.  :)

Quote from: "anarky"

Subject: motion carried. all those in favor?

Quote from: "Fling-Master"

Subject: I second that. :)

Quote from: "Jocke the Beast"

Subject: Take Cover! Nek is getting mad!

I'm not surprised you don't remember Mac, you probably didnt even care to check back, you got the last word in your eyes, you're elite now, yu got to tell someone off. Yay, good days work.

And freebasic.tk has nothing to do with this, not that i know anyways?

Anyways, I guess QB Express is spam too... to bad pete, pack up and leave, we don't want your spam.. oh wait!...

gee...

Or might it be that SJ Zero wasnt cool enough?, what, didnt he flame enough n00bs? or he simply didnt pass your 1337 tests?

Mac, how old are you?, You act like a power mad 12yr old AOL idiot who just got the admin password by some silly misstake. Which is how I will threat you unless you prove me wrong. (In my perception of you that is)

Hmm, that seems familiar. I'm sure I posted it, but I can't find that post anywhere. Could you give me the URL so I can find it and perhaps see the context?

Thanks,

Mac

P.S. To whoever asked: I am 68 years old. I have been programminng professionally since 1958, but am retired now. I "own" the qbasic forum merely to pay network54 a fee so we don't get advertisements.

Sorry, but I come from a generation where one uses polite language in the presence of young people, even though, having been young myself, I remember we used MUCH worse language when our parents and teachers were not around. Still I was brainwashed to not publicly display wanton bad manners or language.

As I remember, someone posted some notification of a site where page one announced that bad language was acceptable and good. I saw no reason for promoting that. However, note that the spam was not removed. I just asked for the decency to quit doing it.

If that means everyone in the world hates me, too bad.

Mac

Post by: Mac on January 21, 2005, 12:01:34 AM
Sorry. I did click on that URL earlier, but didn't comprehend. I thought it was a reference to some post I made on The QBasic Forum.

But now I see it was on the QBXL forum. Wow, you sure hold a grudge!. That post was sometime in December 1903, I guess, since I see a reply:
You sir, are an idiot. - Fling-Master, 12/01/03 - 09:57:48

Well, I only saw one post from SJ Zero about that time:
QB Accelerator Magazine Issue 2 released today! SJ Zero on Nov 25
1  mag.. sal on Nov 25
1.1  Extremely. It's part of the editorial style. SJ Zero on Nov 25
1.1.1  *k.... watever floats ya boat sal on Nov 25
1.1.1.1  Actually, I think I just realized what you meant. SJ Zero on Nov 25
  1.1.1.1.1  ???? sal on Nov 25

I don't know who "sal" was, but it probably brought my attention to the post. Well, all I can remember is that I went to the QBXL site at it appeared to announce right away that if you can't stand bad language, go away, which I did. I don't see any more posts that year, so I can't imagine what prompted me to make the request.

However, since that date, SJ Zero has made at least four posts:
Frost Finished -- Play and vote! SJ Zero on Jan 6
Frost Remembers - QBXL.NET 24 hour FreeBASIC compo SJ Zero on Dec 31
QBXL.NET opens SJ Zero on Apr 24
Spammity spam spam, qbxl issue 3 is out! SJ Zero on Jan 26

I made no further complaints. I assumed either the site was cleaned up or else he was going to ignore my request. That is fine. A lot of people ignore my requests.

Anyway, fine: I see that you, Z!re, are irrevocably committed to hating me forever and attacking my character wherever you can. I can live with that, however much I don't comprehend.

Live long and prosper!

Mac

Title: Ignore this line
Post by: Mac on January 21, 2005, 01:41:56 PM
Well, being used to The QBasic Forum, I just entered a title line and tried to leave the text blank, but it insisted on something.

I now see the custom here is to ignore the subject line and put all information in the text.

Will comply.

My title above was "

*Sigh* OK, I replied to that thread"

It is in response to

I presumed it was a request to go there and close the thread with some response, which I dutifully did.

But I think I'm having a communication problem here. Sorry for the confusion.

According to Mac, giving feedback is: [to] "gush over every post that is an obvious cry for recognition and praise"

"I just know that failure to gush over someone's boast results in being classified as elitist."

I don't even have a comment to all this.
I have to agree with Fling-master, "You sir, are an idiot. " And I'm aware of the grammar error thank you.

C'mon QBASIC.COM has some "elitist"(Mostly people who think they're better than the rest cuz they could code a snake game) but I wouldn't put Mac in their mold. He has done a lot to that forum and putting the link in QBN is not a bad idea.

I don't know what's your beef with each other but the Qbasic.com forum is a nice place, save for people who thinks shadowwolf is spamming(which he isn't.)

Mac: I think the main newbie friendly forum should be on the link, no the new one.

I post both here and on the qbasic.com forum. A lot of the philosopy is the same, particulary regarding the "HELP ME WITH MY HOMEWORK!!!!!" type topics. The only difference that I can see is that Qbnews has a slightly more relaxed attitude, apart from the occasional flame-fest. In fact, I don't see half as many flames on Qbasic.com as on here. Mac has always seemed fair in his comments, and has only banned one person so far, AFAIK.

I don't like Mac very much, but then again, I don't like a lot of people very much. Not like it matters anyways, his life's not gonna break down and he's not gonna be kept up at night just because I think he's a stiff. But I stopped taking qbasic.com seriously years ago and to this day, that's never changed.

By the way Mac, the world, and society, have changed since your youth. People have been long since allowed their freedom from the bonds of superficial social politicking which y'all back then called "manners" and "politeness". Telling random people to fuck off is pretty much the norm these days, especially on forums where there isn't a whole lot anyone can do in return except throw the same words around.

> Mac: I think the main newbie friendly forum should be on the link, not the new one.

relsoft: Tough call. They link to each other, so there is no big problem either way.

I like to enter the forum via what you call "The new one", namely the index of subforums. It gives a quick look to see if anyone has posted any new FAQs, Programs they are proud of, etc.

My feeling is that a true newbie, if he has found QBasicNews.com, will be satisfied with results in the newbie forum found there. So really it is a link for more senior programmers to look into when nothing else is happening here.

Other true newbies who randomly enter "www.qbasic.com" will, of course, wind up at The QBasic Forum, which is the only reason we all haven't abandoned that forum long ago. So we don't need a link to that forum anywhere else.

IMHO

> Telling random people to @$ off is pretty much the norm these days

adosorken, LOL! I am even unliked by people I never heard of. Got to buy a better brand of deodorant!

Well, it may be norm, but I am not. Sorry! But I will say that as much as I am disgusted by the antics of some youth, I pray they keep their minds free of the fanatic religious-right semi-Nazi brainwashing produced by the hate radio stations broadcasting in the USA and thereby save the world.

------- Well, I think this thread should die now. ----------

I am going to unsubscribe. Feel free to beat the dead horse if you want, but I suggest helping newbies instead.

Peace!

Mac

Yes, I understood that you must've followed the old qbasic.com custom =P. Again, i must mention here - zire is just a figment of your imagination. He really doesnt exist :king: So dont mind him =P

I agree with you about the language part. But again you must accept that this is a forum. Many of the "bad" words are automatically censored. But no one can censor "language". How many people do you know who actually use "respectable" language with strangers in real life? So what  I suggest is that please be a little liberal and learn to ignore the "flaws" in others.

Please stop the bashing, I personally respect Mac and his contributions to *this* site. He used to post here regularly, but moreso with old forum.

The Qbasic Forum does an important job by keeping the qbasic dot com forum going as the main site is still the first result in most search engines.

Whilst I don't visit those forums much I do know that these forums have changed a heck of a lot in many ways over the years and often not always for the best or in a way I particularly like.

*nod*.  I really don't see what's wrong with the guy, he's polite and well-intentioned, and it's common courtesy to treat others with the respect they treat you.

Mac... Since you have ad-free HTML space on network54's site, take advantage of it!  There are programs like nvu that let you design a web page like it is a newsletter program or a word document.  If you need graphics, any friend of Wildcard is a friend of mine.  That policy hurt on with qb45, but it still stands :)

Personally, I would never suggest buying from them though.  I've only had painful experiences on Network54 forums.  However, I think you are allowed to tweak the forum settings, to get things like a bulleted index (a definate step up over the standard "table" tree).

I am still wondering why qbasic.com stuck with network54 all this time. As times change, so does forum software. network54's forum software is antique and has been superceded many times over by commercial and even free scripts.

Age has tempered my writing in qbxl, but I did post the link to qbxl3 to spite you. :P QBXL may be toned down from it's first issues, but If I started allowing posts like that, they'd make me turn in my eic badge and give it to someone who didn't. :P

Anyway, that ancient post is far in the past.  Today it's a new age; for qbxl, for qb forums all over, and for the basic community.  With the new age brings new opportunity, and to let ancient prejudices and grudges get in the way of the future would be vain and useless.

I'll have to check out the forum to do something other than spam for once. :)

(though, nobody did actually entered the competition from that forum...or nearly any other. That was dissapointing. The people who did enter had a grand time and a couple really decent games resulted)
