Title: Google's G-Mail
Post by: NovaProgramming on June 24, 2004, 01:20:39 PM
Yeah, so, I know that people have been talking about the "rumor" of the whole G-Mail where you get a gigabyte of storage and whatnot, but it is a reality...  My friend has contacts and such, and I might end up getting a "G-Mail" account here sometime.  Umm, other than that, this thread is pointless.  Yeah.  Well, what do you think?

I've got gmail! It's my first name, then a dot, then my last name at gmail.com (I don't want any spam web-bots getting it).

It's true, you get 1 gig! I don't know what the limit is on individual message/attachment size is though.

But the best part is that the gmail site uses javascript extensively so that you don't have to wait for the page to reload (unless you click on one of the emails). View inbox, click preferences, BAM it's there - no waiting. It's so cool.

I don't have any invites yet, I just got it.

gmail rocks! I seen Yahoo and Hotmail is the news planning to up their storage space, but what I really hope catches on is gmail.com's fast javascript-based interface.

I'd like an invite as well please. My hotmail account is about to burst...

Apparently some hotmail accounts got increased to 100Mb just like that. Evidently GMail's started a "email war" which hopefully it will win :D

I don't have an account, but I've asked, so hopefully I'll get one soon :)

Please don't beg me as I'll get the invitations out when I get more.  This thread came a few days late though.  Zap, Webberboy, Dark_prevail got invited.  whether dark knows or not, I don't know.

It takes awhile to get them.  If you just got it, you have to use it for awhile.  The more you use, the quicker you receive.  When you get them, you will not be notified, there's just a link (says "Invite a friend") next to "create a filter" under the search bar.  Click it, fill out name and email, then press send (I think).  After that, the person receives an email, they sign up and the cycle begins again.

Also, as I said before, they come in bundles of 3.  So if you don't pay attention (like me) you may end up with 6 or 12 or just 3.

Now here I was being happy with my 6MB yahoo limit.  But they increase it to 100MB.  I knda like the 6mb limit as it makes my mails easier to manage., :*)

Title: Google's G-Mail
Post by: barok on June 25, 2004, 02:44:05 AM
See?  Rel finds a something bad with the 100 mb limit in yahoo.  just create a bunch of folders i guess, rel.  It's the only way i can think of managing it easily.  either that or switch to a new email that has a low limit. ;)

i myself wouldn't mind getting a g-mail.  If someone gets an invite (or 3) could they send me one?  It'd be nice to store large files in.  It'd certainly make it easier to send myself pictures/files/programs without having to delete a large majority of my email first. :D

Having all that space isn't such a bad thing with gmail because it has the built in search feature.  You can leave every message and then search for something if you need it later.

You could always use some kind of free hosting service *cough* http://quickhost.tk *cough* to move those files/pictures/programs

Here's the order of how people asked for invites:

mech
bluffer
rockuman
oracle
barok
hard rock
speedlemon
seph

I will be inviting in this order.  Others with gmail, I invite you to do the same.  Considering if we give them out to people, eventually they get invites.  So we can easily feed everyone in this thread.  Just don't sell your free invites, as you are only getting them through generousity anyway.

Also, if anyone else wants them, step in line by posting.  If you are on this list and have gmail now, post that also.

Yeah, that's what I meant... I'd assume you'd announce the people who received invites as you hand them out, and then I'd just announce the next three that I give out...

Just trying to be helpful, though. I'd think you probably wanted some help giving them out to the most-likely-increasing number of people. ;)

Well as I'd probably finish most of the people before others would get theirs.  But if there were a lot more people that asked to be on the list, then yes, it would grow exponentially.

Well I'd like to step in line as well, if that's alright. But since I probably won't end up getting an invite since this is a long list indeed, does anybody have any insider information as to when gmail is going to come out for everbody? Perhaps they will just let it spread by invites?

As for when it's released, they haven't said.  Also, thanks to quite a few forums doing the same thing I'm doing, it's spreading very rapidly.

Added to the list by the way.

Can you do invites in order.  You get more.  It's not like after you use them you are done.  That way, everyone can get them, but it happens in an orderly fashion without people being skipped.

dark_prevail - given invite
mech - given invite
bluffer
rockuman - given invite

They were coming in packages of three.  I got three one day, then three the next.  The last two invites I gave out I got individually, so I don't know.

And yes I get a lot of email.

As for speedlemon's comments:

Oracle got one and Bluffer never has responded with email addy for me to send invite to.

Updated list:

Here's the order of how people asked for invites:

    zap - given invite
    webberboy - given invite
    dark_prevail - given invite
    mech - given invite
    bluffer
    rockuman - given invite
    oracle  - given invite
    barok
    hard rock
    speedlemon
    seph
    na_th_an
    TheBigBasicQ
    Jatos
    eno_on

I'm not going to be chasing people down for email addresses, so I'd post them in here.  If you aren't on the list and want one, speak up and I'll add you.

The only problem that I've been having, and it's not even THAT big of a deal, is the filesize attachment limit... I try and send a 48 MB file to Mech and it sits there for awhile, and eventually says "The Document contains No Data"  or something dumb like that...

There's a link at the top of emails telling you how to view images.  They don't do it because if they load the images, it's posssible for them to learn certain things about your computer iirc.  Microsoft Outlook does the same thing.

As for Nova, I believe the max attachment size at once is a little over 6 megs, but I may be wrong on that also.  Break whatever you send into a few parts.

You can send and receive messages up to 10 megabytes (MB) total (including attachments). Any message that exceeds this limit will not be delivered to your inbox and will be returned to the sender. If you attempt to send an email that exceeds this limit, you will get an error message and your email will not be sent.

They probably do that to avoid having their service be used as a "p2p" network. I wouldnt be suprised if they were aware that warez files are usually split into ~14-15 mb chunks.

So then, all we do... :shifty: ...errrr all warez people do is start splitting files into 9MB chunks instead of 15MB chunks. Simple! :D

LOL, they would try that. Also 10mb is quite a sufficient file size limit for me, if I wanted to transfer any larger files I would use different methods.

I have to admit I don't blame for there file size limit. I like gmail as it is!

They cant eliminate p0rn or warez being distributed over *any* email service.

Yeah, that's the truth.  And the U.S. can't make e-mail porn illegal either...  Because they can't mess with overseas companies...  Oh well, I guess I'll just have to split the file up into 600000 byte size peices... or whatever.

LOL,  the limits don't bother me as I don't d/l porn, can't be bothered to go get some.

Direct Connect.  Full 700 mb movies

Ripping your own movies isn't that hard.  If you want to go the easy way, download FairUse Wizard and it makes Xvid encoded avi's that are pretty as can be.  It also does all the work for you, so you don't have to know much.

Then when you get courageous, pm me and I'll teach you how to make .ogm or .mkv (containers that allow subtitles/chapters/.ogg audio/xvid video)

Of course this is all for backing up purposes.

Ok chaps, I sent the invites to your MSN messenger email addresses.

Unlucky Hard Rock, I'm sure I'll get more invites soon :)

EDIT:

Here, you can test if a GMail username is available or not using my handy url thing that I stole from the signup page:

https://www.google.com/accounts/CheckAvailability?service=mail&continue=http://www.google.com&Email=yourusername@gmail.com&FirstName=YourFirstname&LastName=YourLastname&t=55e9f174-40f7d023-1a5fc2e84a30d242bc87

Just replace the Email, Firstname & Lastname parts of the URL

:)

first of all, THEY HAVE STOPPED GIVING OUT INVITES, just to remove all doubt. Also nova pop an email to jatos.software @ gmail, not my full emails to avoid bots.

All you need to do is give them the link from the email.  You don't even really need to send the email.  Just copy the link and pm it to nathan if needed.

I wouldn't be surprised if they stopped giving out invites temporarily
to rise the tension and urge(?) to get one.
Before you can sell a product you need to create a need for it.
