Title: Oldies still around?
Post by: Diroga on June 17, 2009, 03:54:08 AM
Wow this place still exists! I'm just poking around my old places. I haven't been here is well over 4 years. It's good to see that QB is still active. I haven't used it in years and probably won't use QB and might do some FB for basic game ideas.

Are there any other Oldies around from the 2001 to 2005 era? like whitetigger and who ever? I guess we all grew up and moved on.

Yeah, I remember you, Diroga. How have you been?

I haven't seen Whitetiger around the forums in years. He was a pretty young kid, so he must have found something more challenging than QBasic.

Some of the other guys have moved over to PetesQBSite or Qbasic.com. You won't find the heavy activity of those good old days. The fact that the majority of schools stopped teaching Basic recently, has had a negative effect on the posts at Basic sites.

So, what are you doing these days?

Regards..... Moneo

I have gone to colleges and life stuff. working and what not. I did some C/C++ ASM java here and there. I really dont program anymore. QBASIC was a very good start for me when i was 13. I learned the basics of programming even though i didnt do much with it. QBASIC can do some unexpected things from what i saw here. The 3D demos games were awesome. I cant remember the names but i never thought those games and graphics could have been done with an interpreted old language like QBASIC.

I saw Whitetiger in FreeBasic IRC channel a couple of years back. He did FIRST robotics in C iirc. Im guessing he moved on to university and is doing java or C#. smart kid tho.

I thought qbasic.com died. i know petesqbasic.com has great demos and programs on there but i never did the forums. I understand why QBASIC is not being taught anymore. I would suggest python for beginner programming. I guess QBASIC 4.5 > will die out some time in the distant future. Heck i still see basic books from the 70's still at googwill. I really hope FreeBasic picks up and starts competing with other proprietary basic languages.

I wish the best to everyone. dont get discourage or think anything is too duaghting and overwhelming. keep on learning, trying new things, keep the qb code coming!

Define Oldies? ;)

I don't know you...does that make not an oldie, or does that make me young?  LOL

I gather you still like the Basic language. Forget FB and take a look at:

www.QB64.net

It is developed to extend Qbasic into the 64 bit world of PC's. It also adds better graphics and sound. So far it is a C compiler for QB code to run on new machines.

lol @mystik

i'm kinda old i guess, depending on your perspective... so yeah, i'm pretty young. :p

how's it going guys?

... I'm not old.. o.o;

But I like the question, how many of the (people that have been here for a while) still skim through here? See Moneo, Mistik, and Dave so far =) (of the ones I knew).

I triped over this forum last night looking up articles, tons of memories came back of some of the wild activity that went on here in its heyday. It's cool to see at least three of the people I used to know on here are still around, though sad to see this place is no longer oozing with activity like it used to.  :-\

Yeah man... the old days... like, those 3d modeling challenges were great. That reminds me... I think I still have that light saber on disc here somewhere. :) Any of you guys got any projects to spout about? It doesn't matter to me if it's BASIC or not... I'm just curious. :)

On my end, just been playing around here and there when I have the chance. Rewrote the MP3 Renamer Tool I made a long time ago, only in C++ this time. Its weird and doesn't always work (It does have some fail safes to prevent renaming the file to jiberish, however). Wouldn't recomend use on the only copy of a music collection since it does have the power to delete files.
Link if you want to play with it: http://s248275426.onlinehome.us/MyPics/MP3 ReNamer v0.5b.zip (http://s248275426.onlinehome.us/MyPics/MP3 ReNamer v0.5b.zip)

Then for BASIC things, I've played around with engine physics for awhile:
http://s248275426.onlinehome.us/Videos/tests/EngineSimulation/
Not the most curvy of power curves.. o.o; ..It works completely off bore/stroke/mass/etc.. There are no predefined torques lists lurking in the background of that applications. =)

Haven't done too many things in 3D for awhile, other than little things here and there, experaments, etc. And if I'm not toying with computer languages, I'm attempting learning human ones. I figure I know the basics of so many computer ones, curious to see how many human ones I can add to that list as well.  :) .. Current task, Japanese.. o.o ..

I'm still alive. I write VB apps and SQL queries for a local business. Now I'm starting college in the fall for computer science. I'm actually sitting in an auditorium for my orientation writing this.

@ Ninkazu:
Not exactly sure what that said, other than its some kind a rough love / hate relationship sorta deal from what I could sort out. My main focus atm is the writing for now, not so much the words, and I can pronounce things wrote in hiragana thus far, startng into katakana next.. then Kanji.. yay.. Once I can properly read it, should open up more ability to learn it, and use it. I also have a close friend in Japan that's multilingual who helps me out a lot when ever she can.

And back on topic, this post needs more posters.. O.o;.... Back in the day, this would have had 3-4 pages by now..  :( .. Where did all the FBer's head off too btw, if they no longer hang around here and fb.net is mostly all down to business, is c0de still around? I think I lost the link to that when my other PC blew out.

Hi people :) Nice to see you all again. Brings back memories.

I haven't seen Whitetiger around the forums in years. He was a pretty young kid, so he must have found something more challenging than QBasic.

I still hang out with whitetiger (and DrV) every day. He's a perl hacker nowadays. And not such a young kid any more  :)

Still alive, but not really doing BASIC in any form these days.  I still glance at the FB forum once in a blue moon to be sure nothing is horribly broken.  Most of the lines of code I write are in C now.

I still exist too, hehe. :) Doing mainly C code in FreeBSD these days, but still finishing up my final game in FB as well. Also, working on a serious FPS using a heavily modified version of Vavoom.

Pretty much all of my old posts ever on this site are mindblowingly retarded.

Usually I can't help but to place sentimental value in anything that's old and has to do with me, but I can't bring myself to save any of my "first forum posts on the internet" and the urge to just edit them one by one into blankness begins to swell.

Cobra was pretty cool though

I miss QB.

I haven't been here in ages.  Good to see everyone still around and interesting to see people have moved to bigger and better things.

I'm now heavily into the web programming world and keep myself busy with that.  I haven't touched QB in quite a few years and it'll probably be quite a few before I do again.

Still around in some form or other. We FB'ers now hang on freebasic.net and other such places. I've just about left forum posting for dead. I haven't coded much at all since about two years ago. I have worked on an IRC bot, but progress is very slow. Functional it is, however, when I decide to run it...

I do tend to lurk on IRC than anything else. I'm still available on MSN and Yahoo! and Skype. I would like to see us all get together one day for a chat. I think for most of us, real life has taken over. I don't milk cows anymore, lost the job due to a number of factors. Instead I make fences. I'm now enjoying what a real job has to offer: weekends!

>anarky - No longer putting the milk in your coffee.

"Around" is quite a liberal definition if applied to my presence...Holy hell guys, I've been gone for ages now...

Title: Re: Oldies still around?
Post by: Neo on September 15, 2009, 09:37:35 AM
I guess I can qualify as an 'oldie', but I don't think my presence here can be qualified as still being 'around', and more like 'visiting every few months'.

Ah well. In the meantime I've more or less graduated from QB/FB and DOS in general. My job has had me programming in C++ for over a year, and now C# with SQL, so it's quite different from my past programming.

I hope everyone's doing fine here :)

Hi guys, it's nice to "see some old faces" (you get the idea ). I've came here just to check out.

I'm in touch with some of the old timers, mainly Dav "Nekrophidius", Lachie or Josiah Tobim thru' facebook and a few others, but I really miss the good ol' times. Mainly for the chit-chat, the fun, and the jokes. Even the flame wars. It was great fun.

I see that most of us don't do QB anymore, but it would be fine to gather somewhere for the sake of it.

Cheers everyone :)

Was in the neighborhood, and figured I'd drop by.  I was in high school, maybe middle school when I started posting here; even remember celebrating my 16th with you guys.   Almost finished with college now, and working on my master's.  Time flies.

Started coding in FB.  Would you believe that I've used it for class at least once a year, every year, since college started?

And I've still never "finished" a game.   :D   I have fond memories of you all.

[edit] LOL, I still have the NASA avatar!

Does anyone know how Seph is?  I remember he had a son or daughter.  It occurs to me that that child is five or six now, wow!  And rel's 32 bit avatar has probably started school.

I don't know if I classify as an "oldie" or not. I do know that it's been ages since I looked around here last. College work and other interests have gotten in the way of QB/FB. But now I'm working on my CS degree and started poking around for material for an assignment, so... we'll see if I come back or not. :)

I remember the good old days when there was only one thread going, on aliens, and the few of us still posting were trying to be the last one there. :P

I randomly pop in from time to time too... mostly for nostalgia really.

Can't believe how long ago it seems that all the "old timers" use to hang out around here all working on their RPG engines, QB OSes, asm-powered super awesome graphics libraries or whatever else. All we're really missing is the old black theme for the forum, heh.

Haven't touched QB since probably a year or so before I stopped hanging around here I think. I've been working in C# and some PHP jobs for the last few years. And in my spare time if I can actually be arsed to code something, it's usually in C++.

Anyway, great to see this place still exists!

Nice to see old regulars pop in, these forums are a bit of a ghost town but there are still a lot of memories/good information around. I need to look at my site todo list and fix/rework a lot of the site into a more updated/coherent site (but will still a copy for old times sake, as I do have a copy of the now ancient phpBB 1 forum from back in the day).

I randomly pop in from....damn, you took my line Fling. :P

Anyway, time sure flies. Way too fast if you ask me. What happened with my life? What happened with my dreams? What....khm...never mind.

I don't do QB for ages now. I was rather active in FB game design for a while, but it must be over a year and a half now since I didn't release anything, and many months since I coded anything at all. I guess I lost my mojo or something. I do maintain http://games.freebasic.net (http://games.freebasic.net) and organize a FB game making competition (http://games.freebasic.net/competitions.php) here and there, but nothing spectacular. If I disappear, don't be surprised.

It's all...you know, meh...

Didn't lost interest in game design really. I'm just very, very out of form. Thinking about writting something, but I have so much to practice and stuff to learn in that department which is all leaving me somewhat apathic. I'm employed and I'm living with my girlfriend. :)

I'm going to see Metallica in May.

Meh... :P

Sorry for posting in this old thread but I just thought I should give a shout :). It has been almost 10 years since I made my last post here, but my old account still works. Back in the day I was known as the guy who always had a small snipped of code for coders in need :D. It's nice to see Neo, pr0gger and Na_th_an are still 'active'. I still have most of my old qb programs on my computer. I never had the heart to delete them, it's like some kind of old photo book of code now. Qb has taught me lots of things about coding and it is what I am still doing today, although in Java and .net...

Well I wish all of you qb coders all the best!
Cheers  ;D

Yo. Long time no see!

Speaking of DW3, I've been meaning to finish it on the Nintendo DS but I've lost my copy on a crash. Anyway to send me a copy of the sprites?  I only need the sprites buddy.

As for me, I'm into Nintendo DS homebrews. My latest game is here:

Ah, so here's where you all are.. good to see you guys!

And DW3 still in production, who'd have known  ;D

You know, the funny thing is that with the rise of smartphones we've come full-circle in terms of gaming. Suddenly it's that simple 2D sprite based stuff that's back in fashion. In a world that became obsessed with polygon counts at the expense of gameplay, it's the classic style that's making games fun again. Look at the popularity of 'Tiny Wings' for example - perhaps one of the simplest games ever created! Or Angry Birds.. I was playing a version of that 10 years ago called Worms..

So for me this is great news. I never did like polygons much anyway ;D There's loads of cool QB stuff we've created between us all that would convert brilliantly well to Smartphones. If only it didn't involve learning Objective C or Java, hmmm..

Oracle, Agammenus, na_th_an, relsoft, Jocke, white tiger, all you others -- on the off-chance that one of you stumbles by this thread, I just want to say thank you on behalf of my middle-school self, for helping a fledgeling nerd on his way.

Cheers.

So QBNews is still around!

What about a new 10 liner graphics  contest?   :D

I guess I have lost my touch with graphics, I'm mainly programming PLC's nowadays!

Cheers

*YAAAWNNN!!!*

I think the coder inside me is waking up after all these years. I've been busy with family and managing a PC shop AND trying to get my own shop going. It's a busy life.

But with one of the fastest machines in town at the moment, I'll be certain to try any demo software you guys are still writing! I'd love nothing more to get back into it again, but I've forgotten a ton...

I was bringing Blobworld Comics back from a hiatus this week, and a few minutes ago I saw a post here:

http://forum.qbasicnews.com/index.php?topic=12375.0 (http://forum.qbasicnews.com/index.php?topic=12375.0)

Ugh, WTF was I thinking?

Damn, reading all these names in this thread sure brought up a lot of memories, hehe.

I was thinking Dark Woods 2 would make a cool phone game, browsed around a bit on jocke the beast's site (last post from 2006, forum dead, aww) and figured I give good old QBN a look. Hah :)

Sorry for the necromancy :P

Edit: Oh and I was Zap. Dunno why I have this account now.

Hello, folks.

Feeling nostalgic I coded a little something a couple of afternoons ago. Yeah. It's QB45 and it's DirectQB. The video was made using DOSBox. In fact, I coded this inside QB45 inside DOSBox.

Release soon.

Ah, the memories ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0aEMTotCnY

Hey dudes

It's been a long time. I remember when I would come home and look forward to seeing all the new posts here. It was a joy to learn how to program with you and share all the little moments in general discussion and such.

I don't program BASIC anymore but I can't say that I cared for any other community more than this one. Lots of feels as I went down this thread.

Thanks for all the great years

Wow, so, apparently I just randomly guessed the password for my account. Yay! :D

Do people still hang out with old qb'ers anywhere? I noticed lachie and dr_d posting in the same facebook thread today, haha! Twitter maybe, anyone? I'm @runemoennike but I don't have much interesting to say.

Sometimes I regret I found the qbasic community too late. I never lived the years where it was thriving(when was that I am not sure). I logged in the net at 1998 first time, searching for how to make EXE with qbasic. And then I was amazed that people do so great things in qbasic, games, wolfenstein engine, 3d and 2d demoscene effects. At the same time I discovered about the demoscene and was halfly occupied by qbasic (and later a bit freebasic) and halfly trying to learn C. Meanwhile, most qbasic forums I found started to become dead, I didn't hear much releases, or somehow a sign that there is enough life. Maybe someone is still making a Qbasic project in the dark. The feeling inspires me. Maybe I'll open one of my retro PCs and install Qbasic and try something. Maybe..

Couple of years on, have relocated, new partner, new life. Haven't typed code for ages. A bunch of friends and I are looking at building a multiplayer rougelike but with a story.

That's all we have right now... haha!

Life is good. I should do more than waste my life watching porn and playing Minecraft. :D

I logged in the forum out of curiosity. I do have something about doing QB relevant things in mind. One thing is whether I would do a small site with qbasic effects and demos, just to keep things in track and maybe upload captures of the good demos on youtube. An idea I had many times before and forgot, hopefully not this time. I haven't touched qbasic for ages, I code in modern languages and when going back to some old syntax and memory restrictions it seems weird but nostalgic. I also got a retro(?) Pentium 3 desktop, can run the qbasic demos like very fast, and might install qb45 there for some old feelings.

Yo guys... I have no idea how many of you still come around here. This is where I got started programming. Literally. I learned everything I know on here and the FreeBASIC forum. Anyway, remember sir_mud, right? Well, we have started a software company together. We have one game complete, which I wont mention here because it wasn't very good. :p
To make a long story short, we're about to open our latest game for beta testing. We're pretty happy with this one so far. For now, it's Android only, but we're planning to move it over to Steam after we get the Android specific stuff separated into compilation target specific modules. Anyway, here's a promo video showing some of the gameplay. See ya guys! :D

I guess people still stop by here every once in a while see how the old community is holding together, huh?

I moved on from QB.  Went on to mostly develop in C#, Powershell, Ruby. Throw in some Coffeescript, etc.  When I get home from work I'm going to reread through some of this forum for old times sake.  I kinda miss the old crowd.

I'm stopping by to say "hi". It's been a while. Life's gotten busy. Did my grad school and have been in the software industry for the past 8 years! Mostly doing Python, Java, Scala, C++ and such. I still remember QBasic fondly. Get nostalgic once in a while and so stop by. Cheers!

Recently acquired an old 486 computer and thought it'd be fun to revisit some "old school" programming on it. Not sure how much time I'll spend with it, but I was writing some good ol' mode 13h code with DJGPP and wanted to compare a bit blit routine I did with something else and decided to see how DirectQB compared. Surprised myself that I was able to whip up a simple test program almost entirely from memory having not touched QBasic/DirectQB (or really any other BASIC whatsoever) since probably 2005-6 or so. Now thinking that maybe I need to set aside DJGPP and just toy around with QBasic instead! :)

(also DirectQB blew my own bit blit routine away, haha)

Good times.

100% agreed.

Well, we have the technology.  I just created a google form to try to gather contact info, preferences, etc.  If you're interested in a reunion please fill it out and distribute it to others in the old QB crowd, because posting it just in these forums just won't cut it.  They don't have the reach they used to.  I'm hoping to gather the results in a month or so to try to organize something.  https://goo.gl/forms/AMBETvl22hHLoTdJ2 (https://goo.gl/forms/AMBETvl22hHLoTdJ2)

Pete Berg here, checking in!  It's been a long time.

Here's what I'm up to these days: http://www.peteberg.net

In short...working as TV Producer and traveling the world.  No longer coding, except for a little PHP here and there to make websites.  But Pete's QB Site is still up for archival purposes. :)

Hey all. I remember many of you. I was checking to see, wildcard, if you are the same one who once joined Blue Castle Productions way back when... I think as far back as like 1998? Maybe earlier. Actually before that I think it was called the QB Agency, lol. I don't remember my username back then, maybe xchaser or just Daniel? but I started the group. I don't have a copy of the site any more. John Millard (JTM) and Gopus were there, and one or two others, Rune somebody, I can't recall their names. Just wanted to shout out hello! I am still programming, in FB now, working on Alvarian Tales. You can see it in the projects section over on freebasic.net. I have good memories of the QB community, and I miss it. But nice to see some folks still around. :) Hope to hear back from some of you who remember.

Edit: I filled out the reunion thing. It will likely be hard to get everyone together at a certain time, but I'm up for it.

Post by: toad on December 19, 2017, 02:12:51 AM
Oh, yea, it was Smoke_Rune. And we also had a few others come and go. I found I think our first forum still available online (wow): http://www.network54.com/Forum/54165

On the forum I am Danny. Man I was like 15 years old. Pretty crazy to look back. Good times though.

After that I had my own board. Don't know if it still exists anywhere, probably not, but it would be truly interesting to look back on, as we did a lot of posting there.

Well, I guess I never give up. I've worked on Alvarian Tales for about 20 years now. That was more of a learning experience than anything. Long breaks (a year or more many times.) Now it has turned into actual progress. (Took me long enough, huh?) But hey, life happens. Fling me a message any time, any of you. :) And keep coding, it's good for your brain.  8)

Wow, this is unreal. I found a copy of my website from 2001-03 (https://web.archive.org/web/20030608035712/http://www.sunchasers.com:80/bluecastle/index.cfm?action=forum) on WayBackMachine, Blue Castle Productions, AND most of the forum posts are readable. I'm going to try to get in touch with some of the old team.

Glad to see some old face still stopping by.

Pete: I think I found an old copy of qb-rpgs, I sent it to Fling-master to check out as not sure of it's state.

Toad: Wow, long time! Can't believe how long it's been. Great that the old forums are still online, some companies have kept going. I remember Alvarian Tales, will have to check it out again.

@wildcard, yea that WayBackMachine thing I didn't even know it existed. Apparently it like copies the whole internets every once in awhile, lol. No wonder they are trying to raise $6M. Sounds insane.

Well, you haven't seen JtM (John Millard) around have you?

You doing any programming still?

Yes it's a great service.

I've not seen JtM since the old forum days I think.

I dabble a bit but mostly in Java using libGDX.
