Title: Forum converted to SMF
Post by: wildcard on July 24, 2007, 07:29:53 PM
The forum has now been converted over from phpBB to SMF. It was converted due to SPAM problems. Please let me know what you think and if you have any problems.

YEAH!

You took my suggestion!

How was conversion? Easy?

Great job, wildcard. I would like to offer a couple of suggestions for you as you get this new forum settled in.

In the Admin panel, go to "Current Theme" on the side menu and check "Enable Inline Links". This will make the top links similar to the way they were before.

For heightened security, go to "Registration" on the side menu, then "Settings". Beside "Complexity of visual verification image" is a dropdown list, select "High". This is impenetrable by virtually all known spambots, including the ones with OCR.

EDIT: Also, just so you know, the attachments directory is not presently writable, so avatars cannot be stored here at the moment.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've altered the text and enabled avatar uploading now. I am going to leave the captcha as is as the high level one might be too dificult to read, but if the spam bots get through I will then have to.

Cheers! This look gorgeous :)

Let me reupload my good ol' avatar :)

It looks like the conversion cut off the first character of each person's signature. Well, conversions don't always get done flawlessly, and people can fix that themselves.

wildcard: It might be a good idea to do a forum post recount under the Forum Maintenance menu in the Admin panel.

EDIT: Hey, that was quick. :D

Good. I am glad that it's been changed.

Let me reupload my good ol' avatar :)

Glad to see Wonder Women (I thinkż) back.  I uploaded a similar avatar to the one I used to have, a cartoon series I loved as a kid.

Eponasoft: I didn't directly do anything for the post recount, something indirectly must have triggered it or something, but its good to have it show correctly.

Not that I mean anything bad with that...

Oops, sorry  ;D  Guess I never have seen her outside of these forums.

She wasn't very popular. She got created in late 70s and I think she got a small revamp during the first 2000s, but that's all. I just liked the aesthetics :)

I think the conversion broke my signature just a bit, too.

Unfortunately the conversion did seem to not take or lose one or more characters from the signatures, but atleast most of the information should be there.

The problem, which I guess I changed before you saw it, was the size was too big. (I set part of my sig to size 7, which made the text small before the change)

WILDCARD

Welcome back DUDE!!

This place really went down the tubes after you left. I missed you ;P

How is life? Man this is so crazy  ;D

Funnily enough, just the other day I was gonna hit you up by email to ask you how life is and everything, it seems like so long since you disappeared.

btw, I changed my name after you left. I'm Dark Prevail.

Yeah I missed this place, but it was probably just as well I left when I did but I'm back now. I'm good, I've moved houses and got a new job so life is going ok I guess.

These forums were one of the best communities I was part of so when I saw it was being shutdown I had to step in as much as I could, pretty ironic really considering a couple of years ago I shut them down myself. But there is too much info here on these forums, they need to be kept open. I am going to redesign the main page to point to the best bits like the ABC archives, online help/faq/etc.

Name changes are confusing I'll have to remember that, I think people's avatar's where the biggest identifier.

wildcard?

na_th_an?

Forum alive?

Did I step back into past?

I'm kind of on the same line as KiZ.

Anyway, great to see the forum back alive. Is there some thread about this?

Ok, ok. I'll look for it. This really should have been posted in the news.

Yeah the forums are back as they just couldn't die, they had to be rushed to the hospital but should be ok now :)

I've posted the reopening as a news item now, anyone can post news items at the moment - that will only change if there are problems with spam/etc

Good to see you back too, one of the most prolific QB game makers.

One thing I've noticed is that since the URL formatting is different on SMF versus PHPBB forums, any old links to specific forum posts at Qbasic News are dead.

Old URL: http://forum.qbasicnews.com/viewtopic.php?p=127029

New URL: http://forum.qbasicnews.com/index.php?topic=10578

I wonder if there's anyway to make a little php app that figures out the proper post and converts the old PHPBB url into the SMF url?

Maybe it's not a huge deal to anyone else, but I've just been noticing in old issues of QB Express that just about every news entry links to a forum post here (or at fb.net), and it's really disappointing that all the links are broken...especially since the content is still here.

I've done a quick hack job so old topic s are redirected to their SMF but its only topics not individual posts.

Nice work Wildcard! :) Good to have things back to the way they were ;)

BTW the move to SMF seems to have eaten up the first character of everyone's sig :P

Cheers!

Welcome back TheBigBasicQ, its been a while!

Yeah its annoying that for some reason the conversion missed off the first character for some reason.
