Title: A couple semi-musical musings
Post by: jsmith71 on March 04, 2007, 03:24:22 PM
Just two songs I recorded over the past couple days. The first one's a mellow acoustic sort of thing, probably derived from listening to too much Jack Johnson. Pretentiously happy. :P
http://www.distractionware.com/josiahtobin/files/Sunny_Island_(v2_mastered).mp3

I won't harbor any ill will if you guys hate me for this next one...
It's a cover of a Silent Hill 2 song called Angels Thanatos-- I haven't actually played the game much, but a friend showed me the song from the soundtrack and it was just too cool not to cover.

Now here's the catch... Ultimate lo-fi horribly recorded trash rock production! This song is meant to sound like a crappy, clipped, over-compressed first take of a garage rock band's demo on an old dusty vinyl being played on a turntable with half-blown speakers.

For some reason I really like how it sounds. It sounds like shit, but intentionally so, and... I dunno, maybe I'm just gaining an appreciation for stupidly lo-fi stuff. Anyway, here's the link:

http://www.distractionware.com/josiahtobin/files/Angels_Thanatos.mp3

Don't blame me for any damage to your ears.

~Josiah

EDIT:
Here's a version of Angel's Thanatos with redone guitars, hi-fi drums and none of the layers of distortion and noise:

Since people on other forums seem to find the lo-fi one to be a bit much. :p

Hell March Redux. I guess I'm obsessed with covering this song.

Very cool - sounds much "fuller" or something than the other version I remember you doing. :)

That other version was actually recorded by a friend; I just mixed and mastered it for him. This version is mine. :p It's not done yet though... There's a whole second half I cut out of this version because it wasn't done yet; I have a couple friends doing some absolutely ripping solos for it. (I think that's the first time I've used the phrase 'absolutely ripping')

Crap, only the sunny island file loaded. Quite nice :). I have wondered for a while, if I get my act together and starting to work on my fps for real, would you mind making a track for it?

Hey, sure thing. Depending on what kinda music you want, I might be willing to make you up a whole soundtrack, since I'm trying to do lots of stuff I could put on a resume sometime down the road if I ever pursue my dream of composing music for games. (Not to say that I'd just throw together random shit as resume filler; I would feel terrible for doing that. I always try to do my best ;))

The Mick Turate project has been put on the shelf for a while. The weapon sprites was a pain in the ass and drained to much energy from me really. I will resume work on the game when some of the other projects we have is done. And we have a whole bunch of other projects and I don't think that Freemax want's or have time to do all the soundstracks.
I was thinking if you feel like helping out with some music for The Tales of Sophy II instead perhaps?

Sure, I could give it a shot. Any particular style you have in mind-- real instrumentation, tracked...? If you have a list of some of the songs you'll need, that'd be helpful too.

Sophy's gonna run around in a gothlike castle fighting monsters (much like in the first game) so something dark and not to happy would be great :).

What songs I can come too think of as for now is:
A title song - shouldn't be very long
Main themes - the songs playing when running around. Loopfriendly. I'm not sure how many I will need as I'm not sure on how long I want the game too be.
Battle songs - One for ordinary enemies and one for bosses.

That's what I can think about now.

Alright, I've got some ideas. What format do you need them in? I can do .IT (and other .Mod variations), .Ogg, and .Mp3. I'm just assuming that .Wav is out of the question as it usually is, y'know, given its size. ;)

Yeah, .Wav is out of the picture.
I'd say .Mp3.

Alright... though I'd assume you won't be able to loop them easily, unless I'm missing something.

Looping is no problem at all. I'm using FMod and if I remember correctly you only need theese lines of code to loop it :)
Code:
FSOUND_Sample_Setmode(mysample, FSOUND_LOOP_NORMAL)
FSOUND_Playsound(FSOUND_FREE, mysample)

Well, I was mainly referring to the difficulty of looping mp3s in any program, really.
Regardless though, here's a short-ish piece I just finished (I prefer to work on my songs in a single sitting when possible):

I'm not sure if it's too mellow and/or depressing for what you had in mind, but hey, just throwing it out there.

Very nice Josiah :bounce: This can very well be used as the 'walking around in the castle' theme  :bounce:

I've just realised I've been listening to that for the past 10 minutes whilst browsing Lachie's games directory  :P Nice.

Boss theme.

I've spent all day writing and recording this one... Wrote an initial tracked version first, then played all the guitar and bass parts. I really like how it turned out, I suppose 'epic' may be the correct term. :P
Lemme know what you think.

Alright, I'm not so sure about this one... I sat down to write the title screen song, but something very different came out. Whether it'll work is up to you, and I'll do something different if you don't like it, but anyway-- It's a short, minimal acoustic guitar piece made to sound like it's being played on an old record, which I think really helps the feel of it. I think it'd be really nice as a title screen song, but again, it's up to you.

Sorry, double-post... I dunno if anyone on this forum really cares anymore though.

Anyway, this isn't related to the soundtrack, just something I did for the hell of it.

Just recently I busted out the old Genesis again to play some Phantasy Star IV, one of my favorite 16-bit RPGs. My brother was watching me play, and after remarking how awesome the battle theme was (which was cool, I've been trying to convince him that it's a great game and that he should play it for awhile now :p) I decided to cover it.

Anyway, enough backstory, here's the link:
EDIT: Slightly updated mix can be found on the next page, or here:
http://www.distractionware.com/josiahtobin/ps4battle%20mix%203.mp3
I spent all day recording this one-- Most of it's played, but a few parts are pieced together from different takes because I'm nowhere near as good a guitarist as I sound in my songs. ;)

Intro and ending courtesy of recording an emulator through my headphones.

After I have been listening to the song for quite a while I do think it could be used for the titlescreen. It's cool in a strange way :).

And your PSIV remake is just plain awesome :king:

Alright, cool. :)
Oh, and about the PSIV battle theme, I realized that you couldn't really hear the bass guitar at all (as well as the kick being a bit muted), so I mixed a new version:
http://www.distractionware.com/josiahtobin/ps4battle%20mix%203.mp3
Only small tweaks really, but for people first listening this would be the one to listen to.

Okay, so I tried to write a regular battle theme, but it came out WAY more intense than I intended. I mean, this may well be final boss material.
http://www.distractionware.com/josiahtobin/tos2_battle_mix_1.mp3
Give it a listen and let me know what you want to use it for, so if I can write a proper battle song if you think it's too intense for that.

Title: A couple semi-musical musings
Post by: BadMrBox on June 08, 2007, 11:13:38 AM
Oh, it was intense :o . If I'm too use it then I have to use this as the boss theme and the original bosstheme as the regular fighttheme. And that's nothing I have a problem with  :)

Title: A couple semi-musical musings
Post by: jsmith71 on June 08, 2007, 04:59:44 PM
Alright, if you think the previous boss theme isn't too complex for regular battles. I could always write a normal battle theme that's less intense than either of them, and you could use the original boss theme for bosses and the attempted battle theme for the final boss. Whatever works though. :)

Hm, you are right about that. It is a bit too 'epic' for the regulars battles so to speak. Your suggestion is good.

Aaaand, here's your regular battle theme:

Maybe a little generic, but I think it came out well. Anything else you need, or is that it?
