Title: Post Icon Decisions
Post by: Sumo Jo on January 23, 2006, 02:57:50 PM
Since post icons were voted to be added into the forums, we need to decide what we need icons for and what they should look like.

As of now I'm thinking:

Programming forums:
FB
QB
IDRD (I didn't read directions, for those who don't set an icon)

Now because icons will be modded throughout the forums, do we have more ideas for icons?

Also, if you've got some designs for icons, post them here.  They just may get used.

The problem with doing them as small circles is that you won't be able to fit anything into that size for other icons.  I don't think a bunch of icons that are different sizes would look that good and you can barely tell what those smaller icons are.  If you enlarged the circles more I think they would be a bit better.

Make slightly bigger icons?

IDRD icon could be a smiley with a dunce hat on. :P

Be practical, men. Write FB on the FB icon and QB on the QB icon. I can't see shit if you use the old Windows QB icon.

yes because ~800B *2 WILL kill your internet! :P

And they would be even smaller if it was just text (could be saved as 2,3 or 4 bits png stuffy)

As soon as you get rid of your avatar and smilies used both in your post and sig.  They're really slowing down the internet

Wouldn't it be possible to have a php (or...) script that based on the
user input (radio buttons) generates instead of an image, a text label.

What about something like this instead:

http://www.truthandbeautybombs.com/bb/viewforum.php?f=8

At the beginning of the post subject, just put [QB] or [FB] in brackets.

It looks very clean, and everyone will understand it instantly.  The little FreeBasic horse icon is too small to make out, and the QB one that someone posted was even worse.

Now that idea I dont mind as much, it does look clean not cluttered, and it's obvious what the post is going to be about. Although I still dont like this whole idea at all, this would be a better alternative to the post icons.

I think we should merge all forums, really..
Here isnt even 20 new topics a day, so no use in having 20 forums.

Would be more cosy if it all was in one place.. everyone together.. lets sing..

SSC and Pete, the problem with that idea is that the majority of the users said they wanted post icons as opposed to no icons.  The vote would have been pointless and it would go against the majority.

I really don't think things are that cluttered when post icons are added as they are just another column in the viewforum section.  How is it any worse than the amount of views listed to the left of the post or the information telling who was the last person to post.  Both seem to me to be a bit more useless.  If everyone has dealt with those for this long, why is there a fear that this will cause such a mess or be such a problem?  Is it just a problem with change or is there a valid reason?

Title: Post Icon Decisions
Post by: SSC on January 25, 2006, 11:05:41 PM
having [FB] or [QB] would still be a post icon, but it would be a text version so it would not really be going against the majority, I just think it would look better(more professional even). And as far as the other views such as who was the last person to post, are common to most forum boards.

I replied too late gah.

I think post icons woud work, but it'd have to be clean and non bulky. Also default FB. :king:

Title: Post Icon Decisions
Post by: Z!re on January 25, 2006, 11:30:11 PM
So, someone make some icons that noone will whine about.
Good luck. Go make three icons, that clearly show what they mean, in any and all resolution.
And just text is silly, as already pointed out by Sumo. It would go against the whole purpose..

And people will still misslabel, and the current non-existant problem will remain, i pray the holy goat of Pra'hasndahzqwe'dsf shows mercy on our toes.

Only the QB and FBs are getting merged.

Also, here's the icon with a border, making it seem a bit better.

The icon w/text you posted looks fine to me. Easily made out by the letters on the right, and for those - I won't mention any names - who need pictures because they can't read, the nice horse logo to the left.

I think it's a good compromise between the two camps, and I would see no better option other than having an actual choice - somewhere in the Profile perhaps - over which icon is to be displayed (the picture, the text or both). That way everybody has a chance to be happy. Flame on.

Possibility: For those of us who don't care if it's QB or FB, make an option to turn off the sticky/icon.

I'm not saying this should be the case... just throwing it in to the idea pot!

Removing the sticky/announcement icon would also remove the new post indicator making it harder to tell which topics have had new responses.

Too much contrast against the smartdark skin, but I like it. Something in this fashion would be awesome.

I'd take the chance to update the (default) forum skin, this one is looking a bit dated now :)

If it's going to go in place of those curvy orange/white rectangles, maybe they should be the same size...

It doesn't replace anything.  It just creates another column in the view forum table.

I was assuming you were saying that was the spot to place it.  I was just giving reasons as to why that wouldn't work.  It will be in it's own column in the viewforum section and will still resemble the table setup and not break it.

That was nuts, yet true to some extent.

I see a problem. 99.9% of people DON'T READ POSTING REGULATIONS prior to posting. We are still going to get people here saying **i need help with qb print cmd plz hlep plz!!!111oneoneeleven...

Heh... Can you see how out of plave that would look? At least we'd be able to define who the newbies are.

In that case, make the FB/QB "icon" blank by default and be able to change default setting in your profile. Those who haven't put in a FB/QB icon are automatically labelled as newbies..
